Here it is folks, the 1984 demo of one of the most influencial punk bands of all time! Wooo! I thought it would be a lot worse than it is.. I actually think it's better than their Mystic stuff. The picture on the back of a 15 year old Fat Mike is priceless. The boxset as a whole is pretty fuckin sweet too... 18 records on split colours. Pick it up. Oh wait, this version soul doubt in January.. oops! Best band ever <3 --------------------------------------------------------------------- MirrorCreator

Solea’s sophomore album Finally We Are Nowhere is hard to categorize. Solea has definitely matured since their self-titled debut and can no longer be labeled “emo pop,” but it seems they are still trying to find their voice. The new album, which took two years to produce, is a combination of two completely different sounds. The first eight tracks blend together into a big blur even after multiple listenings. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good music with catchy beats, but it’s just nothing to write home about. Solea’s primary sound is continuously crashing cymbals and rhythmic guitar that combine to create one loud wall of sound backing up pretty mundane lyrics.
However, starting with the ninth track, “Almost Innocent”, the album takes a more interesting turn. Unlike the beginning tracks, “Innocent” starts with a great melodic acoustic guitar intro later joined by Garrett Klahn’s deep haunting vocals. Even though the lyrics aren’t amazing, the sound is what really grabs you on these final tracks.
“The Same Old Stories” follows in the footsteps with a piano and drum intro reminiscent of Death Cab for Cutie. Solea seems to be toying with the idea of going more alternative than poppy, especially with the addition of synth on the newly mixed final track, “Apotheke” which was first produced on the debut album.
While not ground breaking, Finally We Are Nowhere is most definitely an album to be proud of, especially considering the turmoil the band has been through since their debut. After starting work on the album in late 2004, lead singer Garrett Kahn reportedly lost interest and walked out during recording. After a little break, Kahn and guitar player Sergie Loobkoff got back together with drummer Scott McPherson and bass Joseph Orlando to finally finish the album. Perhaps this break that Kahn took is the explanation for the two completely different sounds on the album. Whatever the case, Solea should keep up the soul-searching because it seems to be leading them somewhere instead of nowhere.

Nearly a decade in the making counting the original songwriting sessions between principals Sergie Loobkoff and Garrett Klahn, Solea's self-titled debut album is a solid emo-pop album that combines the best aspects of the two leaders' former bands, the first-generation emo kids Texas Is the Reason and the long-running pop-punk act Samiam. Mixing the former's emotional intensity with the latter's energy and knack for catchy hooks, the 11 songs on Solea have an immediately appealing tunefulness that many emo bands lack. Harmonies, riffs and singalong choruses predominate on the album; it's as if Pinkerton-era Weezer had decided to stop moping and release a Big Star-like power pop record. Highlighted by the surging "I'm Waiting," a could-have-been hit in the style of Jimmy Eat World's pop-emo, and the maddeningly catchy "Shuffle" (apparently the first song Klahn and Loobkoff ever wrote together back in the mid-'90s), Solea is an engaging, satisfying release, and well worth the wait.

It would be logical to assume that if a band is named after a Gil Evans song, the band is going to be jazz-oriented or at least jazz-influenced. Solea's name comes from an instrumental that Evans wrote for Miles Davis' 1959 masterpiece Sketches of Spain, which combined jazz with Spanish flamenco. But Even Stranger, Solea's debut EP, isn't jazz and doesn't have even a trace of flamenco influence; they simply decided that they liked the name Solea and went with it. Solea's forte is alternative pop/rock with a slight punk influence, which isn't to say that any of the songs on this EP are abrasive or confrontational. Solea, in fact, is quite melodic and tuneful, and the lyrics are reflective rather than in your face. Of course, there was a time when "reflective" and "punk-influenced" were terms that one seldom heard in the same paragraph -- early punk, after all, was about shaking things up, not introspection. But times have changed, and in a post-'80s, post-Nevermind rock world, it is hardly uncommon to find bands that have some punk energy but are also into musical craftsmanship and pensive, thoughtful lyrics. Solea clearly fits that description on Even Stranger, which falls short of earth-shattering but is a sincere and well-crafted effort. While this EP won't go down in history as the most essential alterna-rock release of 2003, tunes like "Shuffle" and "Frankie Machine" nonetheless paint a likable picture of the band. Solea's best work may be yet to come, but the band's recording career is off to a decent start on Even Stranger.
